Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship of the social support, health status and health promotion behaviors by perceived economic status among school children.

Methods: Data were collected from 308 fifth or sixth grade school children at three elementary schools located in Seoul. The instruments used for this study were selfreport questionnaires, Economic status by McLoyd, Health Status by Shin, and Health promotion behavior by Ki. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation.

Results: The relationship between economic status and health promotion behavior had a significant negative correlation(r =-.26, p< .01), that means, schoolchildren who had lower perceived economic status is related to lower health promotion behavior. There were significant positive correlation relationships between health status and health promotion behavior(r=.20, p< .01), and between health status and social support (r=.17, p< .01). Health promotion behavior had statistically significant differences in gender of child, parent¡¯s level of education and school record.

Conclusion: The economic status of school children is related to their health status, health promotion behavior and socia support. It is recommended that the economic status of school children should be considered as an important factor for the development of a health promotion behavior program of schoolchildren.
